The X-Files - The Complete First Season (Slim Set)

Season One Disc One: The Pilot Episode

Obviously, this is the first episode of the X-Files. We are introduced to the main characters: Special Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny).

This episode starts with this “The following story is inspired by actual documented account.”

Read my post about a person who saw UFO’s and what I think about that.

We are first introduced to Scully as she is interviewed and assigned to work with Mulder.

A bit of this first part seems a little awkward as the script tries to introduce us to Mulder by having Scully tell us his background.

The part when Scully first meets Mulder seems a bit off.

Mulder comes off a bit overdone as he talks about unexplained phenomenon. It just seems not quite right. I see this often at the beginning of Sci-Fi shows in particular as the actors are not really sure who their characters are yet. The good news, they get much better.

We also get to see the Cigarette Smoking Man.

He appears in almost all the scenes with the FBI directors. He never says a word. He just smokes. He has a great scene at the end which is a bit like the closing scene in the warehouse of Indian Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Scully and Mulder are off to Oregon to investigate the death of a young lady in a forest.

Several of her former high school classmates have also died mysteriously. Previous investigations by the FBI failed to find anything.

Scully and Mulder are lead to a young man and woman that are under psychiatric care

They are also part of the same high school graduating class. The young man happens to be the son of the local sheriff. Later, this girl also dies.

This episode features some great special effects.

The effect of the leaves spinning as the people are abducted in the forest is fantastic.

My version of the DVD’s does not have much in the area of special features

All that is included on the whole disc is an international clip from the pilot. I have seen better additions on the tape versions and find this a disappointment with the DVD’s.

The quality of the picture on the DVD is worth it though

I do like DVD quality over tape. However, the sound is even better. You are in for a treat if you have a good sound system.

Even without much in the special features, I think the DVD’s are great. If you like the X-Files, you will really enjoy the DVD’s. This disc make a great addition to the library of anyone interested in science fiction.
