A rancher and his son are checking the ranch for an animal that has been killing his herds.

The son is attacked out of the shadows by a beast that throws him around. The father arrives just in time to shoot the beast before it can finish off the young man. The beast then turns into a local Indian man.

The rancher is definitely upset about the Indian's death.

Even though he is currently involved in a lawsuit with the Indians about use of the land for ranching. Despite this, he wants to be in the open. He is sure he did not shoot at a human.

Mulder and Scully travel to the nearby reservation to meet with the Indian sheriff.

They are met with a cold welcome as representatives of the U.S. government. The sheriff, who is also an American indian, is not happy to see them either. Mulder’s response to them smelling him coming is classic.

Perhaps the Indian man was cursed by an old legend.

It is not really known if this curse is hereditary or caused by being attacked by the beast itself. His corpse reveals fangs. Because of Indian beliefs, no autopsy can be done to check the body further.

After the Indian man’s funeral, the rancher is attacked and killed by the beast. The sister of the Indian man is missing. Has she also inherited the curse? Is she now turning into some kind of beast at night?

One of the older Indians befriends Mulder.

This is because Mulder seems more open to his Indian beliefs than many or the Indians. He tells Mulder the legend. The sister appears. She saw the beast kill the rancher. It must be he rancher’s son.

Scully is with the rancher’s son.

It is getting dark. Mulder will have to race to get back to the ranch and warn Scully.
