Darkness Falls

This is one of my all time favorite  X-Files episodes. It had an interesting story and great effects. I really enjoy watching this episode on DVD late at night with the lights off.

A group of loggers meet to discuss what to do. Something has gone wrong at the camp. They decide to make a run for it. All thirty run in almost every direction as fast as they can. We follow two of them. One falls and seems to have broken something. He cannot go on. Another tries to help him but it is no good. The terrain is too rough and he is in too much pain. He encourages his friend to leave him and run for himself.

The two loggers hear a sound. They look up to see a glowing swarm. The teaser ends with a scream from these rugged, tough men.

There has been no response from this logging camp of thirty loggers. All had survival skills. Two Federal Forestry officials sent in have also not been heard from. The loggers reported that two militant environmentalists had been in the area before communication was lost. The FBI has been called in to investigate and find out what is going on. Mulder and Scully get to go camping in the woods.

They meet with a Forestry Agent who has a gunshot in his windshield for the environmentalists and a man from the lumber company.

They end up having to finish the trip on foot. The environmentalists have spiked the road and blown the tires.

The logging camp is wrecked.

The equipment is sabotaged along with the radio. They manage to get the generator going. One of the environmentalists (Doug Spinney) wanders into the camp trying to get parts for his vehicle. He is captured by the logging company representative.

Spinney warns them that they need to keep the lights going at night. The darkness is the enemy. If they had not found a cocoon with the body of a man in the trees, no one would have believed him. The logger still does not and leaves for the vehicle to radio for someone to come and arrest Spinney.

The logger makes it to the truck just at nightfall. The glowing swarm encloses him inside the vehicle.

Back at the camp, Mulder, Scully, the forest ranger, and Spinney try to keep the lights going. Mulder lets Spinney loose to try and get his vehicle. Scully is upset with him for making the decision without asking the others.

Will they make it out of the forest alive? Did the loggers disturb something hidden deep in the trees?

This is a great episode of the X-Files to watch late at night. Decide if you want to leave the lights on for yourself. I think this is one of my favorite X-Files DVD’s.
